Thesis Title: Philip II of Spain and Monarchia Universalis: Architecture, Urbanism, and Imperial Display in Habsburg Iberia, 1561-1598.

Dr. Alex Bremner. Senior Lecturer in Architectural History. University of Edinburgh.

About

My research interest lies in the visual and material culture of the early modern Luso-Hispanic world. The doctoral investigation analyses the Imperial display in Architecture and Urbanism in the Iberian Peninsula under Philip II’s rule, through a number of case studies, located in Castile and Portugal. One of the chapters examines the Triumphal entry of Philip II into Lisbon in 1581. I secured funding for a 3D digital recreation project from the Spanish Consulate in Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh: the project has accomplished so far an International Conference and an Exhibition: www.recreatingearlymodernfestivals.com

One of the outcomes from this project is a collection of essays in the form a book to the published by Ashgate Ltd (under contract) and forthcoming in 2013. The collection is (provisionally) entitled 'Festival Culture in the World of the Spanish Habsburgs'. I am co-editing this volume with Prof. Fernando Checa-Cremades, University Complutense in Madrid and a former director of the Museo del Prado.

I have another book-length publication under commission with Brill publishers. Once again, I am the co-editor, this time with Dr Annemarie Jordan CHAM Portugal. This book is entitled (provisionally): 'Court and Spaces of Power in Early Modern Lisbon, 1581-1622'. See a detailed publication list on my CV.

I have been awarded with the University of Edinburgh studentship (2007/2010). The Ernest Cook Bursary by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain 2007, (declined). Barry Wilson award in Architecture, The University of Edinburgh, 2008. During 2010 I have been awarded with the Anglo-Spanish Society Grant 2010 and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Grant for research purposes in 2011.

I passed successfully the viva of my PhD thesis on the 2 April 2012 (Graduation date is 27 June 2012). My external examiner was Professor Rosemarie Mulcahy.
I am currently preparing a monograph based on my thesis tentatively entitled: 'Philip II of Spain & the Wider World: the City, the Archive & the Fame of the Universal Monarch'.
