About
I am an interdisciplinary social researcher based at the University of Edinburgh. I have a background in human geography and childhood studies, and have carried out research on a variety of topics including power in primary schools, counselling services, adolescent health and social work. I also have a growing interest in sound and music, their role in everyday life, and the possibilities of sonic methods for enriching qualitative research.
The best way to find out about my work is to subscribe to my blog: www.michaelgallagher.co.uk
Current and recent activities include:
- a knowledge exchange project about engaging with involuntary service users in social work
- projects exploring experimental audio, visual and site-specific methods, including setting up an international network for this (see www.experimentalnetwork.org)
- a short documentary film examining space and sound in a primary school
Though research is my primary activity, I also teach and supervise students in childhood studies, sound design and digital media.
I'm also a musician, producer and sound recordist. I am one half of a minimal/repetitive band called Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. Recent projects include a series of works involving up to 50 portable cassette recorders, funded by the Scottish Arts Council. I also make minimal techno, which I release anonymously.
