About
Hi there! I'm a sociologist of culture with an interest in post 1980s developments in popular music, digital and media culture, contemporary art, cities and social theory.
I'm currently writing a book called Popular Music, Technology and Society (Sage) and co-editing a collection called Rethinking Sociology in the Digital Age (Palgrave) with Kate Orton-Johnson.
Other work in the pipeline includes an examination of new media cultures and the TV programme Lost (with Kate Orton-Johnson), an exploration of the role of accidents and errors in musical fields, and a long-standing engagement with the cultural sociology of Pierre Bourdieu.
I'm on the advisory board of the journal Cultural Sociology, academic consultant for the media company TernTV, and member of the ESRC peer-review college. I'm also an electronic musician, gamer and fan of contemporary film. I organise the seminar series in sociology at Edinburgh where I am supervising 10 PhD students with really interesting topics (ranging from portraiture, sampling and British comedy to gender and Web 2.0, rock music in Taiwan and video games).
