About

I recently completed my PhD at the University of Edinburgh.

My thesis focuses on processes of censorship of translated literature in the Soviet Union from the 1930s to the 1960s. Through close comparative studies of literary texts published in the journals Internatsional'naia literatura and its successor Inostrannaia literatura, and analysis of related archival documents, I examine censorship as a set of varied and complex cultural practices, focusing on ideological and linguistic issues.

More broadly, my research interests centre around issues of language, culture and ideology in Russia and the Soviet Union. I am particularly interested in the ideological role of translation, and the institutional control of language culture.
