About

As part of the Soillse initiative (www.soillse.ac.uk) I am currently conducting interview-based qualitative research with adults who received Gaelic-medium education when it first started in Scotland, from the mid-1980s. Relatively little research appears to have been done on the long-term effects of the bilingual classroom on individuals’ relationship to the minority language after education is “over and done with” (after Fishman 2001 'Can Threatened Languages Be Saved?', p.470). My primary research questions are the following: What sets of beliefs about the Gaelic language do former Gaelic-medium students profess? What role, if any, does it play in their lives? And how do these ideological and affective stances impact upon their actual language practices, and upon future prospects for language maintenance?
